Hey I’m Back Again

Well….. I have apologized for my tardiness before…. however, this is the last time that I am going to it. It is not because I will never be tardy in my blogging again but because at this point it is become cliche and lets face it I’m not paid to do this, therefore other priorities will supersede this from time to time.

Well the progress report on my life is that I’m 95% complete with the new extension to my present home which incorporates a dining space, two common bedrooms, one master bedroom, a common bathroom and a study space. all of this should add to my family’s comfort level and therefore allows me to focus more on my interests and lifestyle.

I also vowed to focus more on my creative side which was piqued when i did a customer service course and spontaneous acting sketches were involved. that activity made me once again get in touch with that other side of myself, and I think it will aid in my future endeavours.

On this  Tuesday I’m off to officially collect my certificate for my degree,UOG  BSc. CIS ,upper seconds Yah heard me!!!! I went before to collect it but it had a spelling error pertaining to my name so I had to wait for them to send it to England for correction then for UOG to send it back to Trinidad all via snail mail (fun).

Well anyway thanks for tuning in and stay tuned I’ve got a bit of a roller-coaster planned for us.

I’m back again for the first time

So I’ve finished school….at least potentially finished I have to wait for my marks…….I feel sorry for my lecturers who have to sort thorough those hot messes that I submitted to find some sort of sense in them, but as long as they can give me a passing grade then by all intents and purposes I’m finished, I’m a graduate (crosses fingers).

Well you guys deserve an update since my hiatus, presently at this I am at the airport on standby trying to get home. I’ve just finished my last demonstration and I feel like a load has been taken off my shoulders, the world is my oyster, my play pen…..actually I have a host of things to try to carry out now, since basically I’m now a “computing professional” and everyone else in the profession is light years ahead of me. :(

I do have some good news though I’ve started my game development learning I’m using the Unreal Development Kit (UDK) and I have three texts on the matter, “Mastering Unreal Technology Volumes I & II” and “Unreal Development Kit Game Programming with UnrealScript Beginners Guide”. I know the texts are development and programming specific but I figure that’ll be a good place to start for me until I decide how to actually acquire the modelling and art knowledge.
This supplemented by self study courses that the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), Stanford and MIT Freeware course on Python, C++ and programming should do me well in being a well rounded developer/programmer.

For the modelling and the art aspects I think I would use Blender and GIMP or Adobe Photoshop and search for the relevant learning material to aid me along. I’m also a budding web developer since I’m competent in core technologies such as XHTML, Javascript, PHP and MySQL along with all the permeation between AJAX etc. this I think is enough for me to cover and I figure I’ll outsource any skill I maybe lacking, not that I plan to do all my “areas” by myself but in the sense of I’ll fully expect others to make the last decisions and be the officials.

You may be reading this and you may say the UDK uses Kismet and UnrealScript why learn python? Well because I like pain…. no actually all programming languages have the basic core conventions I figure once I understand how to solve problems like a programmer the programming language wont matter, and besides MIT uses Python in their free course-ware is easier to follow if I do.

I do have to register my development studio as a business and start trading under that title…phew any way a standby passenger call is coming up at 6:00pm and now is 5:50pm, so I’m off to see if I got on a flight.

Bye Fellow Dreamers.

Trinidad and Tobago is a Republic Part-1

Now after getting a link to a segment from the Rick Mercer Report titled “Everything you wanted to know about Canada but were afraid to ask” from my friend Mauri who is a Canadian citizen who spent most of his childhood to young adult life in Trinidad and Tobago. It got me into thinking, how many citizens really know about Trinidad and Tobago’s political system? This spurred me to blog, about T&T Politics in that spirit I’m going to give various political and demographic facts about my nation and then we’ll spin into the ups and downs according to me…please feel free to comment as that way we can have multiple views and maybe a healthy discussion.

IN THE PAST

We were a Commonwealth Nation up until 1962 at which point we became Independent, to be a Commonwealth in the English language is literally synonymous with Republic since it means “for the common wealth” but in my observation and opinion, it means in modern “Political English” that the head of state is a monarch who belongs to another sovereign nation. What I am really referring to is a Colony in which we were so in summation what I am saying is that in practical use Commonwealth is more synonymous with Colony than it is to Republic. In Trinidad and Tobago’s case we were a commonwealth/colony of England, the Queen was our head of state, and in her stead, a Governor General ruled us.

Upon 31st August 1962 Trinidad and Tobago declared the right to be self-governed and proclaimed Sovereignty over its territory and ripped down the offending Union Jack Flag of England and hoisted the Flag of Trinidad and Tobago… well actually we didn’t have a violent revolution or anything…. The Honourable Eric Williams aka “The Father of the Nation” proposed Independence to England and England said “Sure, whatever!” I suspect it was not fashionable to have so many commonwealth nations any more and more likely it was not economically viable to continue to have us as a commonwealth/colony anyway, I would even further speculate that it was probably their idea to begin with…cheeky English. But hey we were tipping the curve after all, countries like Canada are still commonwealth/colony nations although Canada is really a “Constitutional Monarchy” but as I said earlier by my definition of commonwealth they still have to say “God Save the Queen” and she is their head of state and the Monarch of England so blech!! :P .

So, after the 31st August 1962 when we gained Independence, we did not become a Republic until 1st August 1976… About fourteen (14) years after Independence… I think that a lot of paper work had to be done and you know how we are with paperwork, it will be done when it is done! Nevertheless, despite the wait we became a REPUBLIC…Although the head of our Legislature is the Privy Council of England. Therefore despite being an Independent republic the highest court in our land is the high court found in another sovereign nation… as I said these things have a lot of paper work and since 1976 to 2011 thirty-five (35) years later we have not gotten around to fixing that… it will be done when it is done!

WE ARE A REPUBLIC!

WE ARE A REPUBLIC! which means (in theory at least) that the people have ultimate control over the government and offices of state are elected or chosen by the people, in average person terms we are not ruled by a monarch!!! There are one hundred and ninety six (196) countries in the today’s world (I am including countries like the Vatican and Taiwan in my count), out of these countries one hundred and fifty (150) are Republics. Further to this, we are a UNITARY REPUBLIC this is philosophically important because since about the 15th century there has been about one hundred and fifty (150) countries that have enjoyed the title of a Unitary Republic further to note about one hundred and thirty-five (135) still enjoy Unitary Republic status to date.

To be a unitary republic means that you are governed constitutionally as one whole unit, now for some people to appreciate this I have to compare that fact to a “first world” country… lets take The United States of America while they are a Republic, they are not a Unitary Republic. they are a “Federal Republic” which means that the states that form the United States of America enjoy a degree of autonomy which is protected by the constitution that “unifies” them.

DID YOU GET THAT DEMOCRACY I SENT YOU?

Another piece of this pie is DEMOCRACY! The greatest thing since slice bread except that it is not, I like how Winston Churchill talked about democracy “Many forms of Government have been tried and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.” :) . I see it as the best thing that we can practically achieve to some degree of success as human beings, which holds some sort of opportunity and fairness for everyone but yet is dispassionate enough to be objective.

The ultimate tenant or ideal of democracy is generally defined as “a form of government in which all adult citizens have an equal say in the decisions that affect their lives. Ideally, this includes equal (and more or less direct) participation in the proposal, development and passage of legislation into law. It can also encompass social, economic and cultural conditions that enable the free and equal practice of political self-determination.” That is a mouthful and very altruistic however the proof is in the pudding, how does one achieve this? well, there are many forms of Democracy, thirty-three (33) flavours to be exact (yes people there is no one generic blend that everyone follows). However, Trinidad and Tobago has a Representative Democracy in which a group of people elect a person… to well… represent them.

The way we have done this is to divide Trinidad and Tobago into forty-one (41) electoral districts in which all the people over the age of eighteen (18) would elect a representative for that electoral district via a ballot system. In actuality in Trinidad and Tobago people vote for the party, they want to win and the person who they want to be Prime Minister, since the Prime Minister is typically the leader of the political party that wins. I have never heard someone saying that Jane or John Doe cannot represent my interest in parliament. They just put the X next to the party symbol. Again in my opinion, the political parties in response to this simply puts a person who is popular in that district and in good standing with the party to be a representative, if that person happens to be qualified then great even better! Now I am not saying that Party and Prime Minister should not be a part of one’s decision making process but I often feel that the important issue of selecting a representative fit to represent you and your area/group is often not taken into account.

So on Election Day everyone who is eligible to vote goes out and cast their ballot for the representative of the party. That representative who wins the most votes then becomes a Minister of Parliament (MP), the party that wins a clear electoral majority by having the most elected representatives then becomes the Government and the head of that party traditionally becomes the Prime Minister (PM). It must be noted that is not necessary for the Prime Minister to win his district thus, you can have a prime minister who is not an MP… I will come back to this later we have not even begun to explore the flaws in this.

The party who wins the second most districts then becomes the Opposition. However, this is where things can get interesting if the government ever loses the political majority, which can happen if ministers “Cross the Floor” or if other parties form a coalition then it is back to the polls. These phenomena have happened before, to “Cross the Floor” in the traditional sense means that if a duly elected Minister(s) of Parliament who belongs to the government decides to join the opposition. In “Crossing the Floor”, the government loses the electoral majority we go “back to the polls”, “crossing the floor” does not automatically mean that we have to vote again, once the government continues to enjoy the majority but it will raise eyebrows to the leadership of the government. It has occurred where Ministers of Parliament “cross the floor” and didn’t join the opposition but simply became independents or even formed their own party (well in a sense they did but not really, but theoretically it can happen).

Phew this is a good place to end for now tune in next time same bat place same bat channel.

I Heard Hip Hop is Dead

Now I might be too late to let people know, but I’m fed-up of people putting Hip-Hop music down. The art form as any other art form will have products of varying substance, given the fast pace of life and culture today people consume and are fed what I consider to be Pop music which in my world is a genre-less classification of music that is simply popular (yes I know Pop is a genre but try to understand what I’m saying!) Most of today’s Hip-Hop that that are chart topper is actually Pop Hip-Hop, to be consumed immediately and forgotten.Another factor that affects the quality of music is that the majority of rap artist are young between 10 to 25 years of age and its consumer base is still relatively young also of the same age group, but I must acknowledge that there are young artists that release products of a very high-caliber in concept and execution. however, Hip-Hop like video games have not fully hit that maturity point, but if Rock music can be used as a barometer as that aging “new kid” on the block soon Hip-Hop will have a large audience over 50 years, and this audience will need songs with a little more substance and finesse, a fact hinted to by the success of recent albums of Jay-Z. As I stated most people listen to highly processed music in almost every genre and then assume that what they heard is the total of what there is out there, well I picked a few tracks that I think embodies what I think is good Hip-Hop some of the artists are commercial successes some are not but all created really great tracks, but this list is in no way exhaustive or complete.

Scar Child: Do Something

Meek Millz: Yall Don’t Hear Me Tho

Rich Boi: Let Get this Paper

Wiz Kalifa: The Statement

Slim the Mobster: Gunplay

Pharoe Monch: When the Gun Draws

Sway & King Tech: The Anthem

Blackstar: Respiration ft. Common

There is Alot Going on, Skyrim, Assassination Plots etc.

APOLOGY

Well again I apologize for my blogging tardiness, but I’ve broken my word and I’m paying for it. I GOT SKYRIM! so imagine and I cannot resist the temptation of playing it every chance I get, then I’m also trying to study for my Information Systems Engineering and Rapid Development Methodology final examinations and somewhere between it all, going to work, being a husband and being a father. It’s hard but I could have much more serious problems in my life so I am happy :) .

THE MEAT OF THE MATTER

I applied for two (2) days off from work to “study” *cough: play Skyrim* and when I came back to the known world yesterday, while going to work I heard on the BBC World Service Radio Channel that an assassination plot against the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Kamala Persad-Bissessar was uncovered (imagine my WTF moment)….. I then turned to the i95.5FM radio station which was in full discussion about the assassination plot and the emergency press conference that was held to avail the public on the details of the matter by the Prime Minister.

Of course when I arrived in work we were on a heightened alert (well from a policy stand point and probably more so those in the administrative positions), compensatory leave was suspended, no visitors on the compound, the gate to the compound is not to be left opened etc, etc. Eventually I heard tidbits of the media conference and other particulars of the assassination plot and I can’t help but feel that this is a ploy to extend the State of Emergency, the media briefing had no details despite the Chief of Police being on the panel along with the Prime Minister, but that could be attributed to the investigation which would be ongoing. They would not want to jeopardize them. I feel that a press release would have been enough and probably a briefing with just the Chief of Police and his Public Information Officer would suffice as no real information was availed.

The word Treason was used to which I chuckled due to the dissociation that I have mentally with this society and those higher concepts. I suspect that her security personnel were involved somehow which would consist of Police and Army officers since the word treason is more associated in our culture with people of commissioned duty or responsibility.

Generally the temperature on the ground is indifference, mistrust and disbelief at least in Tobago, people just want to get on with their lives, to me that is not a good sign and I wonder if they (the Government) are aware of that, because when you are in a positions of power an information vacuüm/bubble can occur where it would seem that you are in touch with the general truth or feelings of the people but you are not. I also feel that since the attempted Coup d’etat in 1990 by the Jamaat al Muslimeen the country’s virginity has been taken and due to the fact that nobody in the opinion of the population adequately paid for it, specifically Yasin Abu Bakr and the leadership of the Muslimeen. Since then there has been a loss in the fire of “Patriotism” and “Duty” in this “twin” island state.

THE END

To bring to an ultimate my synopsis of the matter I have no feelings until I hear more, However I HAVE SKYRIM !!!! and my next blog will be about the civil war that is on going in the game along with the implications of the Thalmor…is it bad that I rather talk about the politics that exist in a video game than that which exist in my country???
